Did you know, besides just eating healthy food, some dietary habits can in fact affect your whole body? Well, if we talk about healthy habits the idea of Ayurveda comes to mind first.

Ayurveda is the ancient system of medicine that goes back over 4000 years. Cultivating healthy habits is the first key to a healthy body and sound mind. In the Indian science of Ayurveda, there are first some ground rules that you will need to follow. If you believe in maintaining the balance of your body, then these habits can change your life. It certainly can correctly balance all your bodily systems.

Why Eating According to Ayurveda is Important?

As we already discussed, Ayurveda is an ancient science that is even accepted by the geniuses of modern science. Numerous lab tests and research has proved that Ayurvedic practices are completely scientific and very useful when it comes to forming a healthy body.

When we opt for more natural, established habits and apply them to our daily lives, it becomes much easier to nurture them into long lasting aspects of our everyday lives. For example, if you work-out in a gym, you will lose weight easier and earlier. But, this habit will demand continued hard-work. While if you opt for a natural yoga or pranayama, it will strengthen you from the inside and you can follow it anywhere, anytime.

5 Good Eating Habits According to Ayurveda

Eat foods according to the season, area and the availability. Listen to what your body is telling you and act according to these cues. These are a few things that can help you establish that healthy body that you always wanted. Let's look at some of the rules that come straight out from the Ayurvedic principles which our country is famed for:

1. Eat Your Meals in a Well Seated Posture

Ayurveda has given great importance to the act of eating alongside the constituents of the food itself. When you eat your food, you should be well seated in an upright posture. If possible, sit in a cross-legged position. If not, then sit on a chair and a table that is comfortable for you and keep your back straight. Also, it is important to remember: do not keep your body stiff. Bend appropriately when approaching to take a bite. Eat slowly, so that your system gets enough time to digest the food.

Stay away from any kind of distractions like your television, laptops or phones. Eat everything with a peace of mind and without any stress or hurry to get the maximum reward.

2. Eat Seasonal Food

We cannot stress enough about the importance of seasonal eating. Always eat your food as per seasonal availability. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits according to the seasons and consider aspects like colder foods such as curd, buttermilk and lemonade in summer months and warmer food like jaggery, butter and nuts in winter. This will help your body to comfortably work without any health issues.

3. Do Not Overeat: Know Where to Stop

You should know where to stop and always incorporate a sattvic diet into your everyday lifestyle. A sattvic diet is one full of all the essential elements, like grains, colourful vegetables, legumes, dairy products, seasonal fruits, nuts and oils. But the point is not to overeat, even when it comes to the healthiest foods. Eat only when you are hungry and do not eat anymore after a big meal. Your body will let you know when this is the case.

Try this trick to control your food portion. Imagine the food that you want to eat and start by taking half of it. Now, eat that half and if you're still hungry, just repeat the process of halving and eating.

4. Eat Food according to the Dusk and Dawn

The ignition of our digestive system is very important to help process our food effectively. It is at its highest point of activity during the day and becomes low with the setting of the sun. So, try to have all your big meals during the day and have your dinner before 7 PM. If you still feel hungry later. Have some turmeric-milk before bed instead of extra snacks or foods.

5. Avoid Harmful Food Combinations

According to Ayurveda, when you combine two foods aimlessly, it can hinder the smooth functioning of your system. Certain food combinations can alter your gut health and leave you feeling uncomfortable and bloated. Foods, like bananas and milk, ghee and honey, yoghurt and sour/citrus fruits are not meant to be eaten together.


Ayurveda is the most sustainable way of living. By eating your food properly you can help to avoid the functional disorders that you usually face and complain about. Never drink your water while standing and start your day with 2-3 glasses of warm water, this will help your body to detoxify all the unhealthy toxins. Eat all-natural chemical-free food that is safe for your body. Organic food is the food that comes from our ancestors and it is the safest kind of food that will help you reduce toxin exposure to your body.
